Methodology
Surface area = entered area × √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²) for footprint mode; otherwise entered area. Materials = surface area × (1 + waste %) × material rate. Labor and removal use surface area without waste. Total = (materials + labor + removal + extras) × (1 + contingency %).
Draft engineering scope: single roof plane pitch assumption; roof footprint is not total indoor floor area. Rate inputs exclude each other. No material suitability assessment, permit determination, tax computation, structural survey, or local quote.
Choose either measured roof surface or roof footprint. If you enter measured roof surface, that area is used directly and pitch does not change it. If you enter roof footprint, including overhangs, the calculator estimates surface area as footprint x square root of (1 + (pitch / 12)^2) using one pitch assumption. Indoor floor area is not roof footprint. The extra material allowance applies only to materials: material purchase area equals roof surface x (1 + waste percentage). Labor and tear-off or disposal are each calculated once from roof surface without the waste allowance. Other project costs are then added, and contingency is applied to the subtotal. With the default surface-mode example, 2,000 sq ft of roof surface and a 10% extra material allowance produces 2,200 sq ft of material allowance. The lower inputs produce $5,500 of materials, $5,000 of labor, $2,000 of tear-off or disposal, and $500 of other costs; after a 10% contingency, the total is $14,300. The upper-rate result is $25,850. These inputs do not determine material suitability, permits, taxes, structural conditions, or local pricing, so use an actual contractor quote for a real project.

Frequently asked questions
Should I enter roof surface or roof footprint?
Use measured roof surface if you already have the sloped roof area. Use roof footprint only when you have the horizontal roof footprint, including overhangs, and want the calculator to apply the entered pitch. Do not substitute indoor floor area for roof footprint.
Why is the material area larger than the roof surface?
The calculator adds the entered extra material percentage to roof surface only for the materials calculation. For example, 2,000 sq ft of surface with a 10% allowance becomes 2,200 sq ft for materials. Labor and removal remain based on 2,000 sq ft.
Are labor and tear-off multiplied by the waste percentage?
No. Material waste affects only the material purchase area. Labor and tear-off or disposal are each calculated once from the roof surface area.
Do the default dollar rates represent typical roofing prices?
No. They are illustrative calculator inputs. Replace them with rates or quotes that match your project, and make sure separate inputs do not duplicate costs already included elsewhere.
When should I get an actual roofing quote?
Get a project-specific quote before making a purchasing decision, especially when material choice, roof complexity, existing damage, structural work, disposal, permits, taxes, or other site conditions can affect the price.
